About this episode
In this episode, Pool Magazine analyzes a short film that will surely resonate with many pool professionals.
“The Current State of the Backyard Pool Industry” may sound like a white paper. Instead, it’s a layered piece of storytelling that uses satire, nostalgia, and realism to explore what backyard pools mean right now.
For decades, pools have represented gathering, connection, and formative childhood years — the setting for cannonballs, long summer evenings, and shared family moments. Today, they compete with phones, financial caution, and a generation of homeowners who scrutinize every repair and renovation expense. Rising costs are real. Sales friction is real. So is the cultural shift unfolding in the American landscape.
The film captures that tension — but it doesn’t stop there.
As the story unfolds, what begins as skepticism and second-guessing transforms into something more timeless. Through humor, exaggeration, and a touch of magic, the film reminds its characters — and the audience — that a pool isn’t just an ongoing expense. It’s the backdrop for creating lasting memories. A reset button. A space where distraction fades and connection returns.
In conversation with the filmmakers, Pool Magazine unpacks whether the story is cynical or hopeful, satire or love letter — and whether the industry is ready to see itself this honestly.
