Amurjo Natural Pool: The Longest Pool in Europe
A natural swimming pool in Spain claims the title of Longest Pool in Europe.
As summer’s scorching heat begins to envelop Spain, the allure of cooling off in a refreshing pool becomes irresistible. Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Andalucía, there lies a hidden gem that stands out amongst the rest – the Amurjo natural pool. Nestled in the heart of Orcera, a quaint municipality in the province of Jaén, this aquatic wonder stretches an impressive 85 meters in length and 19 meters in width, which at nearly the size of a football field, makes it the longest pool in Europe and probably one of the largest natural pools in the world.
But what sets the Amurjo pool apart goes beyond its sheer size. As swimmers glide through its crystalline waters, they’re treated to a panoramic vista of pine-clad mountains, a serene backdrop that seems straight out of a postcard. This idyllic setting, nestled within the Sierra de Segura, offers a tranquil retreat for locals and tourists alike.
The genesis of the Amurjo pool dates back to the 1970s when it was ingeniously repurposed from a humble irrigation reservoir into a recreational oasis. Over the years, it has blossomed into a beloved attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide to bask in its splendor.
Longest Pool In Europe But Not The Largest
While the claim to fame of being Europe’s longest pool might spark debate, the Amurjo pool proudly wears the crown, with its elongated dimensions trumping even the Piscine Alfred Nakache in France which holds the record as the largest pool in Europe. The pool, which was named after French Olympic swimmer Alfred Nakache, has an area of 1.85 acres (7,500 square meters) and is technically larger than Amurjo at 86.5 meters long but not as a single continuous structure. Additionally, the Piscine Alfred Nakache is 12.5 meters (41 feet) wide and has a maximum depth of 2 meters (6.56 feet).
Orcera’s municipal pool, a relic from 1972, has undergone gradual enhancements, evolving into the modern marvel it is today. Each summer, it not only provides a refreshing escape for sun-seekers but also serves as a catalyst for local economic growth. The influx of visitors fuels a vibrant ecosystem of hospitality and service industries, creating employment opportunities and stimulating commerce throughout the village.
Beyond its recreational value, the Amurjo pool embodies sustainability at its core. At the end of each season, while the waters may recede, their journey is far from over. Through a meticulous recycling process, the discharged water finds new purpose, replenishing the local water resources and supporting agricultural endeavors in the community.
As the gates of the Amurjo pool swing open once more, anticipation swells in the air. Summer promises endless days of laughter, leisure, and respite from the sweltering heat. And amidst the verdant beauty of Andalucía, Europe’s longest pool beckons, inviting all to immerse themselves in its refreshing embrace.
