Shortcutting Correct Processes
There are no shortcuts when it comes to the shotcrete process… learn more from Swimming Pool Expert Witness.
Shotcrete is unique because is allows for construction utilizing one-sided forms (earth or man-made). However, pool contractors have even found a way to bastardize this process.
Instead of building rigid forms and properly blocking them off of the steel, they try to shortcut the process. Here we see a contractor that utilized steel-tex tied to or placed between curtains of steel. This paper will flutter and move during the shotcrete process.
Even if it is secured tightly, the steel-tex will create a weak vertical plane through the wall. Placed directly against one layer of steel, it will prevent the steel from becoming fully encapsulated in concrete.
This sheer plane of paper in the wall will promote cracking, water intrusion, steel corrosion and premature degradation of the concrete. The steel bars have also not achieved the correct overlap. Notice how the bars at the top of the spa walls are turned like an inverted L?
The overlap is merely 6-inches the across the top of the wall. To achieve the correct overlap, the bars should be shaped like an inverted J or U.
