H2Flow Controls Introduces Nautis™ VSF

The First Adaptive Constant-Flow 3-In-1 Variable Speed Pool Pump – Designed for Precision, Efficiency, and Peace of Mind

Published

on

H2Flow Controls Introduces Nautis™ VSF

The Nautis™ VSF Variable Speed + Flow Pool Pump is the first pool pump engineered to measure and control actual water flow, not just motor speed. Powered by Eco-Flow® technology, Nautis™ VSF delivers precise, constant circulation that automatically adapts as pool conditions change — without guesswork, external automation, or wasted energy.

The Nautis™ VSF by H2Flow Controls is built for homeowners who want energy efficiency, smart control, and long-term equipment protection without the cost or complexity of full pool automation. It is the only constant-flow pool pump using Eco-Flow® technology to maintain accurate circulation, optimize heater performance, reduce energy and water waste, and protect pool equipment automatically.

The Problem: Traditional Pool Pumps Guess

Most pool pumps rely on fixed RPM settings. Pool owners are told to “set a speed and hope for the best,” even though plumbing layouts, filter conditions, and equipment loads constantly change. This guesswork leads to:

• Wasted electricity from fixed RPM settings that don’t adjust to real-world conditions
• Inconsistent water quality caused by fluctuating circulation
• Reduced heater and heat pump efficiency due to unstable flow
• Excessive backwashing that leads to unnecessary water loss
• Premature wear on pumps, filters, and plumbing components

More settings don’t solve the problem. Accuracy does.

The Solution: Nautis™ VSF with Eco-Flow® Technology

Nautis™ VSF is the first adaptive constant-flow pool pump designed to automatically adjust motor speed based on real-time flow measurement.

Instead of locking in a fixed RPM, Nautis™ VSF maintains a precise gallons-per-minute flow rate. As filters get dirty, valves are adjusted, or system resistance changes, the pump adapts automatically to maintain proper circulation — without manual recalibration.

This intelligence is built directly into the pump, not added later through external automation.

What Makes Nautis™ VSF Different From Traditional Variable-Speed Pumps?

Traditional variable-speed pumps control speed. Nautis™ VSF controls flow.

Nautis™ VSF maintains constant circulation accuracy within approximately ±2%, ensuring predictable turnover, even chemical distribution, and stable system performance as conditions change. Pool owners set the desired flow or turnover, and the pump continuously adjusts to maintain it.

The result is cleaner water, reduced chemical waste, and consistent circulation without constant adjustment.

“Our new Nautis VSF isn’t just another variable speed pump — it’s the first truly adaptive flow pump designed specifically for the realities of today’s pool systems,” said Gavin Hackett, CEO of H2Flow Controls. “By automatically adjusting to changing conditions like filter loading and system demand, Nautis VSF maintains constant flow without the guesswork. The result is optimized performance, improved energy efficiency, and a better overall experience for pool owners and operators. It’s a smarter, more responsive approach to circulation that reflects where our industry is headed.”

Built-In Smart Control Without Expensive Automation

Many “smart” pool systems require costly automation panels and complex installations. Nautis™ VSF eliminates that requirement.

The pump includes built-in micro-automation and connects through the BlueSync™ app or web interface, allowing homeowners to:

• Monitor real-time pump performance
• Adjust operating modes without adding an external automation panel
• Receive alerts and performance notifications instantly
• Manage turnover rates and boost cycles with precision control

No separate automation controller is required.

The Best Pool Pump for Heat Pumps and Heaters

Heat pumps and heaters require stable, specific flow rates to operate efficiently. Fluctuating flow causes cycling, inefficiency, and unnecessary wear.

Nautis™ VSF maintains a steady, exact flow rate, making it an ideal pool pump for heat pump systems. Unlike standard variable-speed pumps, it does not require a bypass valve and automatically adapts to maintain optimal heater performance while reducing energy waste.

Equipment Protection Through Constant Flow

Fluctuating circulation stresses filters, heaters, and plumbing. Nautis™ VSF stabilizes the entire system.

The pump continuously monitors flow conditions and detects abnormalities such as blockages or sudden flow loss. If a problem is detected, Nautis™ VSF can shut down automatically and notify the homeowner, helping prevent costly damage before it occurs.

Energy and Water Efficiency That Adjusts in Real Time

Traditional energy-efficient pumps lose efficiency as system conditions change. Nautis™ VSF compensates continuously.

By maintaining precise flow instead of overspeeding, Nautis™ VSF reduces unnecessary energy consumption, minimizes excessive backwashing, and alerts owners when maintenance is actually needed — saving both water and electricity over time.

Designed for Easy Maintenance and Long-Term Reliability

Nautis™ VSF is engineered for real-world ownership and serviceability, featuring:

• LED-lit pump lid for fast, at-a-glance inspection
• Four-bolt, service-friendly housing design
• Integrated lid lock ring with ergonomic grip points
• Safe dry-run capability for up to one hour
• Wet-tested at the factory before shipment

These features simplify maintenance while extending equipment life.

Simple Installation and Broad Compatibility

Nautis™ VSF is designed as a true drop-in replacement, making upgrades straightforward without re-plumbing.

Compatible installations include:

• Direct drop-in replacement for Hayward® Super Pump®
• Compatible with Pentair® SuperFlo® and WhisperFlo®
• Included risers for flexible height matching
• Quick-disconnect unions and internal thread connections

This reduces installation time and labor costs while modernizing pool performance.

Who Should Choose the Nautis™ VSF Pool Pump?

Nautis™ VSF is ideal for:

• Homeowners looking to lower energy costs through precise flow control
• Those who want smart functionality without full automation systems
• Pools operating heat pumps or heaters that require stable flow
• Owners seeking built-in equipment protection
• Anyone prioritizing long-term reliability and simplified maintenance

Long-Term Value, Built In

Manufactured in the United States and engineered with precision, Nautis™ VSF reflects H2Flow Controls’ commitment to smarter, more responsible pool technology. By measuring and controlling what actually matters — flow — it delivers consistent circulation, lower operating costs, and confidence over the life of the pool.

For homeowners searching for the best energy-efficient pool pump, the best constant-flow pool pump, or a smart pool pump that works seamlessly with heat pumps, Nautis™ VSF stands apart as the only pump that replaces guesswork with accuracy.

Pool Pumps and Motors are Getting Smarter and More Energy Efficient

Pool Pumps and Motors are Getting Smarter and More Energy Efficient

Pool pumps and motors are no longer just devices to keep customers’ pools properly filtered. Rather, they are SMART, energy efficient, eco-conscious and can be connected to whatever automation the homeowner has available.

Want to turn on the hot tub before you leave work so the water is nice and toasty when you get home? Check. Monitor chemical levels remotely? Check. Get alerted if you left the pool lights on last night? Check.

Advanced pool technology is becoming so commonplace that it’s easy to forget that just a few decades ago, life – and swimming pools — were managed very differently. And that motors and pumps were not very energy efficient.

This article looks at how far the industry has come in terms of technology and provides guidelines on how and when to best integrate high-efficiency pumps and motors into customers’ pool systems.

A Look Back

Pool ownership in America soared in the 1980s and 1990s as homeowners began discovering that a swimming pool significantly increased the value of one’s home. Plus, pools offered fun, relaxation, and socializing opportunities.

Single speed pumps to circulate the water were dominant during this time frame and more than 60% of the replacements made by the pool service professional were motor replacements to get their customers back up and running.

Standardization of pumps and motors came together as manufacturers developed standard mounting configurations between the wet-end and the motor.

A Focus on Efficiency

In the 2010s, the market was driven by energy efficiency regulations and technology improvements. The market shifted from single-speed motor powered pumps and introduced the variable speed pump and to a lesser extent, the variable speed motor which powers the pump. These variable speed pumps and motors allow pool professionals to adjust motor speed based upon need which dramatically reduces energy consumption as both motor and pump manufactures tout energy savings potentials of 80% or higher.

Efficiency regulations greatly influenced the adaptation of these higher efficiency products with California’s Title 20/24 leading the way. ENERGY STAR®-certified pumps also materialized during this decade and this widely known recognition advised consumers that they are purchasing or installing an energy efficient pump. In this decade, the market participants created smarter, quieter and more energy efficient pool pumps and motors. Users and pool service professionals became more aware, and pool professionals led the charge of educating homeowners regarding these energy efficient products.

DOE’s pool pump regulations

Variable Speed and Pool Control Systems

The current decade begins with the DOE’s 2021 regulation requiring most in-ground pool pumps to be variable speed. The market has shifted in this direction as these pumps are more energy efficient but now, many, when connected to PCSs, offer Wi-Fi connectivity. Pool Control Systems are becoming very popular too, and these PCSs integrate with homeowners’ SMART home systems therefore integrating the backyard with the SMART home.

With the new technology, a homeowner can control schedules, motor speeds, heaters, lights, and chlorinator settings from their smart phones. PCSs also allow for the pool service professional to better control water chemistry and create enhanced safety features such as alarms that alert homeowners if someone is in the pool, or alerts the homeowner should chemicals be out of balance or if the filter needs to be cleaned.

Utility companies have also joined in as they are implementing demand response programming where they may adjust pool equipment energy loads during peak hours to avoid strains on the power grid. California utility companies are leading the way with demand response systems as this state often has blackout issues and therefore the need to reduce energy consumption when the potential for a power outage arises.

In September 2025, the DOE implemented a rule to require pool replacement motors to be variable speed, similar to the 2021 rule for replacement pumps. This is a positive for the industry and the environment as pool professionals will replace almost all failed pumps and motors on in-ground pool pumps with energy-efficient variable speed equipment.

Motor manufacturers are also making their new variable speed motor products versatile enough to communicate with PCSs, connect with existing time clocks, or operate completely on their own. Whichever manner pool service professionals wish to manage pump and motor operation, today’s products can accommodate. They simply need square flange and C-flange variable speed motors on their trucks, and they can feel confident they will have an energy efficient, SMART replacement product for any pump they encounter.

When to Replace a Pool Pump or Motor

When to Replace a Motor or Pump

Because variable speed pumps and motors allow users to adjust motor speed based upon need, this dramatically reduces energy consumption as both motor and pump manufactures tout energy savings potentials of 80% or higher.

Pool servicers can help customers save on energy costs by installing new equipment. However, for financial reasons some customers may prefer to delay replacement of either the pump or the motor until failure.

To help guide customers on this decision, pool servicers need to be aware of when to replace just the motor or the entire motor-pump assembly. Many factors play into this decision, including age of the equipment and visible signs of damage such as corrosion or cracks.

Any pump more than 10 years old should be replaced. Other reasons to replace include:

• The pump housing is cracked or is leaking water
• Corrosion and discoloration are visible on the wet-end. This likely indicates internal damage and it is time for a replacement
• The pump is frequently losing prime. This indicates air and/or liquid leakage
• The wet-end is making loud noises. This could indicate misalignment inside the pump end
• If the cost of the replacement motor is more than two-thirds of the cost to replace the complete pump, it is recommended to purchase the complete pump assembly

Replacing the motor only

This option can be chosen under these circumstances:

• The customer is on a budget. Generally, a motor replacement plus an installation kit is the lowest cost option for the homeowner and no replumbing work will be required
• The pump housing or wet-end is intact with no leaks or cracks
• The motor is making noise or will not start. Bearings or capacitors fail, causing grinding or screeching noises
• The pump is relatively new. If the pump end is less than 10 years old, replacing only the motor is generally the smarter and more cost-effective option
• The homeowner may wish to simply upgrade their motor to a new variable speed motor. Pool pros can confidently advise the homeowner they will achieve all the energy savings associated with variable speed by upgrading the motor only

For pool servicers, contractors, and pool product manufacturers, this is an exciting time to be in the pool industry, as technology continues to evolve and provides better energy efficiency and even more options to enjoy the backyard pool.

The Competitive Advantage, Automate to Dominate With Pentair Pool

Automation isn’t just a buzzword anymore—it’s rapidly becoming the defining feature that separates forward-thinking pool professionals from those simply keeping up. To explore why automation has become such a powerful differentiator, Pool Magazine sat down with Rodney McCall, IoT Product Manager for Pentair Pool, on a recent episode of the Pool Magazine Podcast. Over two decades at Pentair have given him a front row seat to the evolution of automation, and today, he sees it as nothing short of transformative for both professionals and homeowners.

Asked why automation has become such a game changer, McCall laid the foundation clearly. “Automation isn’t just about convenience. It’s a competitive advantage for builders. It future proofs installs and delivers a premium experience that helps you as a pool builder stand out,” he explained. For the homeowner, he added, automation is no longer an upgrade—it’s an expectation. With the Pentair Pool app, customers gain the ability to control, monitor, and manage everything from simple pools to the most complex backyard environments anytime, anywhere in the world.

When the conversation shifted toward defining that “premium experience,” McCall didn’t hesitate. “Automation makes pool ownership a lot simpler and stress free, and I think that’s the premium experience,” he said. With intelligent flow logic that automatically optimizes heaters, water features, filtration, and energy savings, pool owners are no longer intimidated by the equipment pad. Instead, they engage with their pool confidently, often through intuitive touchscreen controls or the Pentair Pool app.

Delivering a Better Customer Experience Through Automation

Why Builders Should Lead With Automation

Some builders still hesitate to standardize pool automation, so the question became what benefits resonate most with homeowners. McCall pointed to the emotional side of pool ownership as much as the practical. “Not only does automation make it easier, it also makes it more fun, and that’s why people buy pools in the first place,” he said. Whether creating a gentle waterfall for a quiet night at home or a dramatic full-power water feature for entertaining, homeowners can instantly tailor the experience with a single tap.

Scheduling, too, reduces the need for customer intervention. “Automation allows customers to spend less time managing their pool and more time enjoying their pool,” he explained. Combined with IntelliFlo variable speed pumps—something McCall compares to volume control for the backyard—the system effortlessly delivers low, medium, or high performance based on pre-set preferences.

Why Pentair Automation Stands Out

The conversation turned naturally to why a builder should choose Pentair’s automation suite over competing systems. McCall emphasized breadth and flexibility. “Pentair offers automation solutions for every pool,” he noted. For basic pools, the IntelliFlo3 pump now includes a relay card, introducing affordable entry-level automation that gives customers convenient control through the Pentair Pool app.

For more complex designs, IntelliCenter remains the flagship. “It features a high-definition color touchscreen at the equipment pad, and even an indoor control panel that looks and feels premium,” he said. Beyond aesthetics, McCall stressed that the homeowner’s daily interaction with the pool happens through the automation system. “You don’t want to leave that customer with a low-end interface or a non-intuitive app. And I think we have the best pool app in the business.”

Pentair Pro App puts remote monitoring in the palm of your hand.

Remote Monitoring: The Pro Advantage

When asked what additional tools builders should be factoring into their discussions with customers, McCall pivoted to one of the biggest differentiators Pentair offers: remote monitoring. “Remote monitoring allows the builder to still have some contact with that swimming pool,” he said. If a customer has an issue, the builder or service tech can instantly review filtration status, sanitizer levels, pH, salt levels, and other diagnostics without first rolling a truck.

McCall calls it the “know before you go” advantage, saving professionals time while providing faster support for customers. In many cases, alerts identify issues before the homeowner realizes there’s a problem, strengthening trust and long-term loyalty.

Understanding IntelliCenter and IntelliCenter Lite

Before installation, builders must understand the differences between IntelliCenter configurations. McCall broke it down simply: “There’s one we call the IntelliCenter Lite… it does not have space for electrical breakers. The IntelliCenter we refer to as a load center, and the load center has the space for the electrical breakers.”

He added that the Lite version includes a low-cost WiFi bridge similar to what many others use, while the full IntelliCenter uses Pentair’s high-powered wireless kit, designed for stronger and more reliable backyard connectivity. “It’s really robust when it comes to connectivity, even in really challenging backyards,” he said.

Lighting, Connectivity, and the Future of Smart Pools

IntelliBrite’s Evolution: Introducing IntelliVibe

Lighting has become one of the most powerful selling tools for builders, so the discussion turned toward Pentair’s new IntelliVibe system. McCall’s enthusiasm was unmistakable. “The pools where I have seen IntelliVibe, the colors are so vibrant, and it is our newest lighting product,” he said. Unlike legacy lighting, which can lag during color changes, IntelliVibe reacts instantly in the Pentair Pool app. It offers millions of colors, adjustable color temperature, dimming, and independent control of up to four distinct lighting zones—without consuming valuable IntelliCenter relays.

With three fixture sizes, including options suitable for out-of-water landscape installations, IntelliVibe gives builders enormous creative flexibility. McCall sees lighting as a referral generator. “When the neighbor sees how awesome your backyard looks with IntelliVibe, he’s gonna want it in his backyard too,” he laughed. And soon, IntelliVibe will be available even without IntelliCenter—requiring only the Pentair Pool app.

Solving the Backyard Connectivity Problem

Connectivity challenges consistently frustrate pool professionals, and McCall acknowledged how Pentair tackles the issue. “The IntelliCenter uses 900 megahertz technology… it is really good at penetrating walls and distance,” he said. This long-range signal requires no router password, no WiFi extenders, and minimal configuration.

The installation process, though technical, is straightforward, with clear steps for mounting transceivers, routing Ethernet cables, and powering components. Builders who follow the sequence find setup smooth and repeatable, even in difficult sites.

Setting Up a Customer’s IntelliCenter Account

Once connected, creating the customer’s IntelliCenter account is simple. Builders input property details, email credentials, and secure passwords directly at the outdoor control panel. “Then you download the Pentair Pool app and log in using the email and password you just created,” McCall explained. From there, the app guides the tech through notification settings and customization options, instantly activating remote control capabilities.

Training, Support, and Long-Term Resources

When asked what support exists for pros who run into issues, McCall didn’t hesitate. “Pentair technical support… I like to say it’s the best in the business,” he said. The long-standing 800 number connects builders directly with experts, and Pentair’s Pro Resource Education Center offers how-to videos, guides, learning modules, and a nationwide schedule of Pentair University in-person trainings.

Automate to Dominate - Pentair Pool

Looking Ahead: The Future of Smart Pool Ownership

Where Pentair Is Headed

As the conversation wrapped, McCall shared Pentair’s broader vision. “We are going to keep pushing the boundaries of what smart pools and our equipment can do,” he said. From automation and remote monitoring to next-generation lighting, Pentair aims to make pool ownership easier, more sustainable, and more enjoyable. For pros, the message was clear. “Automation is not just a convenience anymore. It is a way to grow your business and offer that premium service and stay ahead of the curve.”

Pool pros looking to strengthen their competitive edge are finding that automation isn’t just part of the job anymore—it’s becoming the centerpiece of exceptional backyard experiences. And as Pentair continues to expand what’s possible, the opportunity for builders to “automate to dominate” has never been stronger.
