#1 – Swimming Pools & Open Plan Concepts
One of the most notable ways people are incorporating swimming pools into their homes is by creating designs focused around their outdoor living area. With the increasing popularity of open-plan living, homeowners are gravitating towards concepts that make the pool a more central focus of their indoor / outdoor living space.
Designing an Open Plan Pool Concept for Your Backyard
The combination of an open-plan design, the right outdoor living furniture and a swimming pool provides a unique opportunity to create a beautiful, functional and enjoyable space that is both stylish and elegant. This means accomplishing an open flow towards the backyard where the swimming pool often serves as the main feature of their outdoor living area.
Key Aspects of an Open Plan Concept
“One of the key aspects of open-plan concepts that incorporate a swimming pool is the integration of the indoor and outdoor spaces,” said Frisco, TX pool builder – Tyler Griffith of Lonestar Pool & Spa Designs, “the object of the game is to design the interior and exterior spaces to flow seamlessly into one other, creating a space that feels open and inviting. This is frequently achieved through the use of large glass doors and windows, as well as by using materials such as natural stone and timber that complement the indoor and outdoor spaces.”
“Another important aspect of open-plan concepts that incorporate a swimming pool is the use of modern aesthetic tastes,” said Griffith, “this includes the use of clean lines, neutral colors, and minimalistic design elements, which create a sense of spaciousness and a feeling of relaxation.”
#2 – Incorporating Spectacular Water Features
Another popular trend developing in swimming pools, according to designer Chris Johannsen is the incorporation of water features, which are becoming an increasingly popular addition when planning a pool. “These features add visual interest and provide an additional source of entertainment for swimmers and non-swimmers alike,” said Johannsen.
“Water features in the backyard are a beautiful addition to any home, especially when they incorporate a swimming pool. From stunning waterfalls to playful fountains and deck jets, water features can add visual interest, provide a source of entertainment, and create a peaceful and calming environment in your backyard,” said Johannsen, “With the advancement of technology, water features can now incorporate LED lighting and can even be synchronized with your music system, making them an even more integral part of your outdoor living space.”
3 Water Features That Promote a Sense of Tranquility In The Backyard
Waterfalls
Waterfalls are one of the most popular water features in the backyard, and for good reason. They provide a stunning visual effect and a peaceful sound that creates a relaxing atmosphere. Waterfalls can be incorporated into the pool design, or can be designed as a separate feature, such as a rock waterfall that cascades into the pool. With LED lighting, waterfalls can be lit up at night to create a dramatic effect and enhance the beauty of your outdoor living space.
Fountains
Fountains are another popular water feature that can incorporate a swimming pool. Outdoor living spaces are also being incorporated into homes in a number of other ways, with many homeowners investing in outdoor kitchens and dining areas, according to Paula Thomas of Thomas Pools & Spas in Modesto. “These spaces are perfect for entertaining guests and provide a comfortable area for cooking, dining and relaxing, said Thomas, “many homeowners are also incorporating fire pits, fireplaces and outdoor lighting into their outdoor living spaces, making them usable even after the sun sets.”
“Designers are always looking for ways to incorporate these kind of elements into the swimming pool area to create a seamless and functional outdoor living space,” said Thomas, “We accomplish this by capturing the homeowners vision and pairing that with the right design, materials, and techniques to create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and practical.
Identifying The Techniques Designers Use
Flow & Symmetry
One of the most popular techniques used by designers is to create a continuous flow and symmetry between the pool area and the surrounding outdoor living areas. This is done by using similar materials, such as pavers or decking, for the pool deck and adjacent outdoor living areas. This creates a cohesive look and feel and helps to visually connect the different areas. A sense of balance and symmetry are evident in well defined and congruent outdoor living spaces.
Seating
One of the most popular outdoor living trends is creating in-pool seating. One technique used by designers is to incorporate multiple built-in seating areas into the pool itself. This can be achieved by using built-in benches, ledges, chaise lounges, or even in-pool stools. This provides a convenient and comfortable place for people to sit and relax when lounging pool side, and it also helps to define the space while creating areas of comfort and recreation.
Landscaping
Landscaping is becoming so much more important these days, according to pool builder Jacob Tetrick of Quality USA Pools. “We’re always striving to incorporate greenery and landscaping into the swimming pool area to create a natural and serene environment,” explained Tetrick, “you can usually achieve this by planting trees, shrubs, and flowers around the pool area, or by creating a lush green lawn. This not only provides a visual barrier between the pool area and the surrounding environment but also adds to the overall beauty and tranquility of the space.”
Shade
“Shade structures, such as cabanas, pergolas, or shade sails, are being increasingly used by designers to provide protection from the sun and create an inviting outdoor living area,” according to Thomas Cartwright of Windy City Pools, “shade structures can also be used to define the space and provide a backdrop for outdoor dining or entertaining. We’re seeing a greater use of shade sails to help create a respite from the beating sun while in the pool itself. Smart designers are making better use of these amenities to solve real world usability issues for swimmers and thinking ahead of how the pool will actually be used.”
Lighting
“Lighting is an important aspect of designing an outdoor living area around a swimming pool,” said Jason De Bosky of Crystal Blue Aquatics, “pool designers carefully appropriate lighting to highlight the pool and its surrounding areas, to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in the evenings, and to provide a safer environment for swimming. Designers often wind up using a combination of overhead lights, strip lighting, and accent lighting to create a beautiful and functional outdoor living space.”
#4 – Eco-Friendly
According to Ben Joseph of Custom Outdoor Trends in Rockwall, TX, another popular trend in swimming pools and outdoor living spaces is the incorporation of sustainable and eco-friendly features. “From solar-powered heaters to ultra-efficient pool pumps and filters to products made to recycle the pool water itself, homeowners are looking for ways to make their swimming pools and outdoor living spaces more sustainable and environmentally-friendly,” said Joseph.
“One of the most important factors in designing an eco-smart pool is energy efficiency, explained Joseph, “Swimming pools can be major energy consumers, and designers are working to reduce this by incorporating features such as variable-speed pumps, recycling systems, and energy-efficient heaters. By reducing the energy consumption of the pool, homeowners can lower their monthly energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.”
#5 – Smart Technology
Finally, many homeowners are investing in smart technology when building their swimming pools and outdoor living spaces. This includes smart pool covers that can be controlled remotely, smart lighting systems, AI-based pool fences and even pool cleaning robots. These smart technologies make maintaining and using your swimming pool and outdoor living spaces easier and more convenient.

San Rafael, CA (August 31, 2026) – This September, in recognition of Baby Safety Month, SafeSplash Swim School encourages families to introduce safe water habits early through an ongoing combination of parent and caregiver preparedness, foundational skill-building and everyday safety habits that start well before a child can swim independently.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the U.S. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that swim lessons are one layer of drowning prevention, alongside close supervision, barriers to prevent unintended water access, CPR readiness, emergency preparedness and other safety practices. These statistics highlight the importance of year-round water safety practices, including active supervision, CPR preparedness and early education.
“Families often think about water safety after a child can swim independently, but prevention must start much earlier,” said Alissa Magrum, Executive Director of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. “Efforts that help parents and caregivers understand that undistracted supervision, barriers and alarms, life jackets, CPR readiness and emergency preparedness are critical layers of protection should work alongside the process of introducing infants and toddlers to the water in a positive, age-appropriate way. This comprehensive approach to water safety can help build a strong foundation for safer experiences in and around all kinds of water.”
SafeSplash’s ParentTot and Toddler Transition programs introduce babies and toddlers to water safety through age-appropriate instruction, including guided play and songs, while educating parents and caregivers on how to build safe routines and support their swimmer journey. ParentTot classes give babies and young toddlers the opportunity to build comfort with a parent or caregiver in the water, while Toddler Transition classes help young swimmers begin developing more independence with support from trained instructors.
In these early stages, lessons focus on self-rescue skills while building comfort and trust. Babies and toddlers will learn safe pool entry and exits, breath control, supported floating and more through positive water exploration. As children grow, those early experiences help prepare them for more independent swim instruction and continued skill development.

Infant CPR Night for Parents offers free or low-cost infant and child CPR instruction led by certified instructors, local EMS, fire departments or Red Cross providers, along with an overview of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s Five Layers of Protection. ParentTot Open Swim allows families to experience SafeSplash’s early childhood programming, meet instructors, and introduce their baby or toddler to the water.
While Baby Safety Month provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of infant and toddler water safety, SafeSplash emphasizes that drowning prevention is a year-round conversation. This initiative combines with SafeSplash’s ongoing S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Promise, bringing lifesaving education to more kids nationwide. NORRISTOWN, Pennsylvania – Women in the Industry (WITI), an initiative of the Northeast Spa & Pool Association (NESPA), is proud to host its 3rd Annual WITI Walk on Sunday, October 11, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at scenic Norristown Farm Park in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
Participants may also join virtually from anywhere in the country, allowing supporters nationwide to walk, run, or donate in support of a shared mission: ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn the life-saving skill of swimming.
The walk benefits Every Child a Swimmer (ECAS), a national nonprofit dedicated to preventing childhood drowning by providing swim lesson scholarships to children from low-income families, promoting water safety education, and advancing legislation that expands access to drowning prevention resources. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages one to four, making access to swimming lessons and water safety education more important than ever.
The partnership between NESPA, WITI, and Every Child a Swimmer reflects the pool industry’s unwavering commitment to safety. While WITI exists to empower, mentor, and elevate women throughout the industry, its members also recognize the important role they play in protecting families and promoting the safe enjoyment of water. Together, these organizations help educate communities, expand access to swim lessons, and work toward a future where every child has the opportunity to learn to swim.

After losing her 19-month-old daughter, Edna Mae (“Em”), to drowning in 2009, McGovern dedicated her life to ensuring other families never experience the same tragedy. Today, her leadership has helped grow Every Child a Swimmer into a national network of more than 430 participating swim school locations across 46 states, providing nearly $1 million annually in swim lesson scholarships for children in need.
“Our mission is simple,” said McGovern. “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn this life-saving skill, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. Through partnerships like WITI, we’re expanding access to swim lessons, measuring outcomes, and helping ensure more children gain the skills they need to stay safe around water.”
